The BUP symposium 2020 has been moved on-line due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The event will take place at the same days as planned.

For next year, we plan to have another BUP symposium in Visby when we can meet in person. This meeting will take place the 23rd - 27th of August 2021 and include our 30 years anniversary! The information below will apply for the meeting in 2021.

The Symposium will be held at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland, which is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage and Hanseatic town of Visby. The location of Visby on the island of Gotland, in the middle of the Baltic Sea, makes it the perfect setting to discuss the future of sustainability in the region.

The Symposium will take place in the main building of Uppsala University Campus Gotland. Address: Cramérgatan 3, 621 57 Visby.

The city of Visby can be reached by air or by sea. Visby has its own airport, which has a variety of national and international connections. More information on flights to Visby Airport (VBY). There are ferry connections from Nynäshamn, Västervik and Oskarshamn, all in mainland Sweden to Visby. Information on ferries here.

Travel Costs

We would like to point out that at your respective universities there might be a possibility to cover the costs for travel and subsistence by EU grants, e.g. Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for training. Contact the international or Erasmus+ office your university to find out if these opportunities are available. The BUP Secretariat at Uppsala University is ready to support your documents as the receiving institution.

Where to stay

Conference participants are asked to make their own arrangements for accommodation. There are various hotels and “Bed and Breakfast” accommodation in Visby, which delegates may choose from. The details and options can be seen here.

Some hotels close to Campus Gotland include:

  • Clarion Hotel Wisby
  • Hotell Visby Börs
  • Donners Hotell
  • Visby Vandrarhem
  • Visby Logi & Vandrarhem
  • Best Western Strand Hotel
  • Hotell Gute

Gotland has a semi-continental variety of a marine climate. This results in larger seasonal differences than typical of marine climates in spite of it being surrounded by the Baltic Sea for large distances in all directions. This is due to strong continental winds travelling over the sea from surrounding great landmasses.

In August expect temperatures somewhere between 15oC and 22oC. There is also a chance of rain.
